I am actively performing as both an orchestral musician and a soloist. I also teach and support students in learning to play the flute and in growing their inner strength as musicians.
Short Bio
Sungdu Bae is a South Korean flutist and music educator currently pursuing a Master of Music in Performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He completed his Bachelor of Music degree at Sonoma State University, where he won the concerto competition twice. Sungdu has performed with ensembles including the San Luis Obispo Symphony, FOOSA Philharmonic, and Texas Music Festival Orchestra. He studied with distinguished flutists including Catherine Payne, Leone Buyse, Kelly Zimba Lukić, Victoria Hauk, and Kathleen Reynolds. As both a performer and teacher, Sungdu hopes to inspire audiences and support young musicians through music education.

Biography
South Korean flutist Sungdu Bae is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studies with Catherine Payne. He previously earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Sonoma State University, studying with Kathleen Reynolds and Victoria Hauk. He has also studied with internationally recognized artists including Leone Buyse and Kelly Zimba Lukić through the Artist Diploma program, OAcademy.
Bae has received numerous awards and scholarships throughout his musical career. In 2026, he won Third Prize in the National Collegiate Solo Competition presented by The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and was awarded scholarships from both schools, festivals and Presser Foundation. At Sonoma State University, he won the Concerto Competition twice and received multiple full scholarships and merit awards for artistic and academic achievement.
An active orchestral musician, Bae has performed with ensembles including the San Luis Obispo Symphony, where he appeared as substitute principal flute and is expected to join as second flute, the SF Camerata Orchestra as principal flute, and the Military Band of Korea Military Academy, where he served as principal flute from 2021 to 2023. He has also performed with the FOOSA Philharmonic Orchestra and the CBDNA W/NW Intercollegiate Band and participated in the Texas Music Festival.
As a soloist, Bae has appeared in performances of Liebermann's Flute Concerto with the Sonoma State Symphony Orchestra, Ibert's Flute Concerto with the Ukiah Symphony, and Chaminade’s Concertino with the FOOSA Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been featured in chamber and contemporary music performances, including PianoSonoma, New Music Sonoma, and Jewish Music Series concerts.
Bae has participated in numerous festivals and masterclasses, including,Texas Music Festival, FOOSA Philharmonic Orchestra, Flutes by the Sea, and PianoSonoma. Through these experiences, he has performed for distinguished artists such as Jasmine Choi, Viviana Guzman, Emily Skala, Joshua Betty and Yubeen Kim.
